How it works
The calculator uses the 30% rule, a widely recognised budgeting guideline. Take your monthly income, subtract regular monthly expenses (excluding rent), then multiply the remaining disposable income by 30%. That is your maximum recommended monthly rent.
Neighbourhoods are marked Affordable when the lower end of their rent range falls within your budget, Stretch when the average rent is within 25% above your maximum, and Out of range for the rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 30% rule? +
The 30% rule is a widely used budgeting guideline that says you should spend no more than 30% of your gross monthly income on rent. It helps keep housing costs manageable and leaves room for savings, food, transport, and other essentials.
Does the calculator include utility bills? +
No. The calculator shows rent-only affordability. In La Línea, utilities (electricity, water, internet) typically add €60–120/month on top of rent. Factor this into your expenses input for a more realistic result.
Is La Línea affordable for Gibraltar workers? +
Yes. La Línea is significantly cheaper than Gibraltar for equivalent properties, making it a popular choice for cross-border workers. A 2-bed flat in La Línea can cost less than a studio in Ocean Village. The trade-off is the daily border crossing.
