La Atunara
La Línea's fishing quarter — raw character and Levante beach on your doorstep.
La Atunara is the oldest and most characterful barrio in La Línea, a working fishing quarter that has retained its identity through decades of development around it. The neighbourhood takes its name from the old tuna fishing industry — "atún" is tuna in Spanish — and the fishing tradition remains visible in the small-boat harbour at the edge of the barrio. It is a place of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and a community that has been here for generations.
Levante beach runs along the eastern side of the barrio, a quieter stretch of coast than the Poniente seafront, popular with locals rather than tourists. The beach faces east, catching morning sun, and the views look out toward Algeciras and the mountains of southern Spain rather than straight at Gibraltar. It is a different rhythm here — slower, more traditional, more authentically Andalusian.
Rents in La Atunara are among the more affordable in La Línea, reflecting the older housing stock and the neighbourhood's working-class roots. Properties tend to be small townhouses and ground-floor flats rather than large apartment complexes. For expats and cross-border workers who want genuine local life rather than a sanitised development, this is a compelling option.
